The Kinderhook Plates Readers should note that today, these items are either lost or verified forgeries. The Manual’s Kinderhook section defends Joseph Smith’s partial translation. Its editors suggest that the testimony of Wilbur Fugate, who admitted creating the plates as a hoax, must be false, primarily because only he out of the three “discoverers” blew the whistle on the forgery. Moreover, the editors express suspicion of Fugate because he waited 36 years to confess his part in the supposed hoax.
Why, they ask, did he not confess his supposed hoax immediately after the release of Joseph Smith’s initial translation? Kimball, the Cchurch also published missionary pamphlets in the s with the story of the Kinderhook Plates—apparently to be used as a conversion tool. After penetrating about eleven feet the workers came to a bed of limestone that had been subjected to the action of fire.

A man named Gerald Peterson Sr. Allred’s son, Owen, wasn’t about to be denied his inheritance by some ghost story. He fought back and took most of his dad’s church. But a small chunk splintered off with Peterson, and that’s how my church — the Righteous Branch — began. He sought out one of the fundamentalist sects that agreed with him on that issue and that would let him collect a bunch of hot, young wives.
He wanted to find wives who were younger and skinnier than my mom, so he could add babies to them. At one point before we joined, he even left my mom to pursue a much younger woman, convinced he’d been called to it like a sacred task. It was quite a disappointment to him when he finally got assigned his first official second wife when I was about She was about his age, postmenopausal, and overweight — which is the downside of having some old dude choose for you I’ll get into the disturbing reason he got stuck with her in a moment.

General Conference is a gathering of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), held biannually every April and October at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, each conference, members of the church gather in a series of two-hour sessions to listen to sermons from church leaders. It consists of four general sessions.
In the LDS Church, general conference is a series of semiannual meetings where general authorities and other church leaders preach sermons and give guidance to church members. Changes to church leadership are also proposed and sustained through the principle of common consent. General conferences are held on the weekends of the first Sundays in April and October. The April conference includes annual statistical and financial audit reports not included in the October meeting. Both conferences are identified by the number of years since the church was founded in April ; thus, the April meeting was the th Annual General Conference, and the October meeting was the th Semiannual General Conference.
Since October , all of the conferences have been held in Salt Lake City, Utah , with the exception of the April conference, which was held in St. Historically, General Conference was held over three days, with the annual conference always including April 6, the anniversary of the church’s organization. This made conference participation difficult for those with work and school commitments when April 6 fell on a weekday.
In April , during Spencer W. Kimball ‘s presidency, changes were made to reduce the conference to the first Saturday and Sunday of April and October.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the growing disparity between the numbers of single Mormon men and single Mormon women. But amidst all the hand-wringing about what this means for dating and marriage, there are larger implications for what it means for Mormonism, and I had quite a few follow-up questions. So I tracked down sociologist Rick Phillips , who with Ryan Cragun has authored the forthcoming study on the sex ratio disparity among Utah Mormons.
Both scholars are past presidents of the Mormon Social Science Association.

Oaks, Quorum of the 12 Apostles. Critics’ Arguments Latter-day Saints are repeatedly encouraged to rely on a witness of the spirit i. Holy Ghost to personally authenticate the truthfulness of the origins and content of the Book of Mormon. Given constant encouragement from general and local leaders of reliance on supernatural manifestations a testimony over testable claims, it is not surprising that many faithful Latter-Day Saints seem unfazed by empirical evidence or the lack of it contradicting Book of Mormon claims, whether the research is conducted by Mormon or non-Mormon archaeologists and historians.
Of even greater concern is that many faithful LDS members, by virtue of the admonition of their leaders mentioned above , are not even aware of the perplexing problems contained in the Book of Mormon text. As a result, they are usually unable to effectively dialogue with critics without resorting to faith-based claims in a testimony which carry no authoritative weight for the many dedicated experts in the fields of archaeology, history, linguistics, genetics, etc.
This page details some problems that arise by accepting the Church-sanctioned teachings of the origin and content of the BOM as well as responses to those problems from the LDS Church, apologists and devout members. Anachronisms An anachronism is when writing contains something from a future time period which couldn’t realistically be in the time period they’ve written it into.
Count the clock,” with Cassius replying, “The clock has stricken three. Shakespeare took something familiar to him, a clock that strikes the hours, and placed it in his story before such clocks existed. Because the play is fictional, it is seen as simply an error on Shakespeare’s part. If, however, someone were to claim that they had found an ancient writing from 44 BC that had the play written on it, it would clearly be seen as a forgery because of the clock anachronism.
If the play “Julius Caesar” were purported to be a historical document, originally written in Latin in 44 BC and translated by someone in the ‘s, claiming that God gave them the translation of that document, would that one clock anachronism be enough for you to disbelieve that it was truly from 44 BC or a translation from God? If it would require more than one anachronism for you to disbelieve, how many such anachronisms would be needed for you to realize the writing was not what it claimed to be?

The Talk to the All-Church Coordinating Council by Boyd K. Packer This is the most controversial talk ever circulated on the Internet. I was a convert after high school after much vehement opposition from my parents. My high school boyfriend was LDS and I got totally sucked in. I believed it with everything. Anyway, he went on his mission and I proceeded to marry the first guy I met in college. I went to Michigan State University and was heavily involved with the student ward there so I met a returned missionary at an institute dance.
We got married when I was nineteen. I had my first baby at twenty-one. I knew my marriage was awful within months and was told by bishop after bishop that this was my trial in life. During the fifteen years of my first marriage I got used to looking at everyone else who seemed happy and knowing that would never be me.
